NEW YORK, Sept. 22, 2026 /CNW/ -- Today, the Prime Minister, Mark Carney, met with the President of Angola, João Lourenço, on the margins of the 81^st Session of the United Nations General Assembly.

Prime Minister Carney and President Lourenço discussed opportunities to strengthen commercial and economic ties between Canada and Angola, including deepening our collaboration in mining and critical minerals – a key strategic priority for both countries.

The Prime Minister and the President welcomed progress on negotiations toward a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on economic cooperation and agreed to work toward its conclusion. The two leaders welcomed the opportunity for enhanced cooperation through the signing of a Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (FIPA). With Canadian exports to Angola more than doubling in 2025 at over $200 million, the MOU and FIPA would provide a path to further deepen economic ties and support greater trade and investment between Canada and Angola.

The leaders discussed regional security and stability. Prime Minister Carney commended President Lourenço's leadership in this area, including through Angola's chairmanship of the African Union in 2025.

Prime Minister Carney invited President Lourenço to Canada at a mutually convenient time. The leaders agreed to remain in close contact.
